Restoring Natural Drainage: Advanced Care for Blocked Tear Ducts

At Dr. P. S. Hardia Advanced Eye Surgery and Research Institute, we specialize in treating Epiphora a condition characterized by excessive and persistent watery eyes. Often caused by a blockage in the Nasolacrimal (tear) duct, this issue can lead to blurred vision, skin irritation, and recurrent eye infections. Probing and Syringing is the gold-standard diagnostic and therapeutic procedure used to identify and clear these obstructions.

Our diagnostic process involves a gentle “syringing” test where a saline solution is used to check the patency of the tear drainage system. If a minor blockage is detected, “probing” is performed using a thin, blunt instrument to carefully open the narrowed duct. This dual approach not only identifies the exact location of the blockage but often provides immediate relief from the overflow of tears.

Leveraging our Guinness World Record legacy, we ensure that these delicate procedures are performed with extreme precision and minimal discomfort. Whether you are dealing with age-related duct narrowing or a congenital blockage in a child, our experts provide a safe, quick, and effective solution to restore your eye’s natural moisture balance and comfort.

Why Our Precision Duct Clearing is the Best Solutio

    • Elimination of Constant Tearing: Effectively clears the blockage, allowing tears to drain naturally into the nose rather than overflowing onto the face.
    • Prevention of Chronic Infections: By clearing stagnant tears, the procedure significantly reduces the risk of painful infections like Dacryocystitis.
    • Improved Visual Clarity: Removing the constant film of excess tears from the eye's surface helps in restoring sharp and stable vision.
    • Quick & Safe Procedure: Performed as a day-care treatment, Probing & Syringing takes less than 15 minutes and allows for an immediate return to daily life.
    • Accurate Treatment Mapping: If the blockage is severe, this procedure helps our surgeons plan for advanced treatments like DCR surgery with 100% precision.

    Guided by Specialized Lacrimal Instruments

Utilizing precision micro-cannulas and blunt-tipped probes, we ensure the safe and effective clearance of tear duct obstructions, providing immediate relief from eye watering and associated irritation.

    FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

    Frequently Asked Questions

Why are my eyes always watering?
Persistent watery eyes (Epiphora) are usually caused by either an overproduction of tears due to irritation/dryness or a blockage in the tear drainage ducts. Probing and Syringing is used to test and clear these blockages.
Is the Probing and Syringing procedure painful?
Not at all. We use anesthetic eye drops to numb the area before starting. While you might feel a slight sensation of fluid in your nose or throat during syringing, the process is quick and virtually painless.
How long does the procedure take?
The entire process, including preparation, usually takes about 10 to 15 minutes per eye. It is performed as an outpatient procedure, so you can go home immediately.
Can this be done for babies with watery eyes?
Yes. Many infants are born with a blocked tear duct (Congenital Nasolacrimal Duct Obstruction). If it doesn't open with massage, probing is a highly successful and safe way to clear the path.
Will I need surgery after syringing?
If the syringing shows that the duct is completely and permanently scarred, a more advanced surgery called DCR might be needed. However, for many patients, simple probing is enough to solve the problem.
    What is the recovery like?
There is no "down-time." You might experience slight redness or a "stuffy nose" sensation for a few hours, but most patients return to normal activities immediately after leaving the clinic.
